SPOOK SERIES
by Joseph Delaney
When I first created this page this author does not seem to have any website. The next best thing I could find is an article about his Spook series writings by BBC. You can click his picture below for a link to the article:

But now, they have a website for this books' series with author blogs and movie info: www.spooksbooks.com.

“The Spook’s trained many, but precious few completed their time,” Mam said, “and those that did aren’t a patch on him. They’re flawed or weak or cowardly. They walk a twisted path taking money for accomplishing little. So there’s only you left now, son. You’re the last chance. The last hope. Thomas Ward is the seventh son of a seventh son and has been apprenticed to the local Spook. The job is hard, the Spook is distant and many apprentices have failed before him. You’ve been Mr. Gregory’s apprentice for six months, so you’ve had enough to see things for yourself,’ Mam said. ‘And by now the dark has noticed you and will be trying to hunt you down. But remember this… when you’re a man, then it’ll be the dark’s turn to be afraid, because then you’ll be the hunter not the hunted. That’s why I gave you life.’
The Spook and his apprentice, Thomas Ward, have travelled to Priestown to defeat the Bane, a powerful, evil creature that lurks in the catacombs of the cathedral and is corrupting the County.
As Thomas and his master prepare to battle with the Bane, they soon realize it isn’t their only enemy in Priestown. The Quisitor has arrived, searching the County for those who meddle with the dark – witches, warlocks and spooks! Can Thomas and his master survive the horror that follows…? |

‘Pendle district is riddled with witches,’ The Spook said.’ …The biggest problem we face is their sheer numbers. Often witches bicker and argue but when they do agree and meet together with a common purpose, their strength is greatly increased. Aye, we must beware that. You see that’s right at the heart of the threat we face – that the witch clans might unite.’
In Pendle, the witches are rising and the three most powerful clans are rumoured to be uniting in order to conjure an unimaginable evil. Together they will be capable of raising the dark made flesh – the Devil himself.
Tom and the Spook need to set off for Pendle to avert the unthinkable. Before they go, the Spook tells Tom to journey home and collect the trunks Mam left behind for him. But what dark family secrets are contained in the trunks? And will they place Tom’s family in even greater danger or provide the help Tom and his master need in Pendle?

A different look on fantasy stories. Slightly predictable, however, if you are already hooked in this series then you can easily overlook that. Still enjoyable.

‘Stand up now,’ she commanded, her voice sharp. ‘It’s almost time. The moment of danger is close. Very soon our enemies will be here.’
‘Enemies?’ I asked. ‘Is there more than one?’
‘Of course, child. The Fiend’s daughter will not be alone. She has called others to her aid. Water witches from far and wide are converging on this hillock. The struggle is imminent.’
As danger increases in the County, Tom is sent north by his master to be trained by Bill Arkwright, another spook. Arkwright lives in a haunted mill on the edge of a treacherous marsh and his training methods are harsh. He has toughened up many previous apprentices though and now he must do the same for Tom.
But when the Fiend sends his own daughter, a powerful water witch, to destroy Tom, Arkwright makes an error of judgement and Tom finds himself facing his enemies alone. The Spook and Alice hasten to his aid but will even their combined strength suffice in the face of such terrible dark power? And what is the Spook’s mistake, the consequences of which might give final victory to the dark? |
